The 3 Types of Training You NEED to Do

There are three interconnected training elements that when combined, are a powerful weapon for increasing your health span (how long you live healthy and disease free). Focusing on only 1 or 2 of the three elements will leave you missing key ingredients for healthy living. Here are the 3 types of training you NEED to do.

Cardio Exercise – The Secret to Energy

Cardio is the base exercise system that energizes you, manages fatigue and ultimately offers a way to live the best life possible. It took me years to realize this but once I did, everything changed. Once I added consistent Zone 2 and VO2 Max work into my training, my energy shot through the roof. I became a better father, husband, and leader. Don’t underestimate the transformative power of having energy. It has the potential to elevate every aspect of life, on and off the field.

Strength Training – Your Path to Resilience and ConfidenceStrength training

While cardio is great for managing energy levels, on its own, cardio will make it nearly impossible to maintain muscle mass. Strength work will keep you strong, help you build muscle, and build confidence.

Strength training is the secret to developing the muscle tone that you are looking for. To develop the muscle tone that you want, you need to start with some muscle. Losing weight while not actively strength training will cause muscle loss as well as fat.  In fact, you won’t know if the weight you are losing is muscle or fat.  Losing fat is the real goal here for 99% of people.

Mobility Training

Mobility Training

What does mobility training even mean?  It means having control of your body through a wide variety of ranges of motion, not just being able to sit in a stretch for 30 seconds. Most people never see the mobility gains they are looking for because they spend too much time static stretching, while neglecting active mobility work.

Static stretching is one option, but without the right strengthening of any of these ranges of motion and/or getting joints into optimal positions it is ultimately ineffective.

True mobility involves strengthening the body within various ranges of motion and aligning the joints to their optimal positions to allow better movement of the muscles/bones.  With focused mobility work you will see your mobility skyrocket.  But be prepared to put in the time and work for the result you are looking for.

There you have the three interconnected cornerstones of a solid fitness regimen: cardio, strength and mobility training. Each plays a part in leveling up your health span and quality of life along the way.
